PROVO -- After a string of slow starts this year, the Utah basketball team figured the best cure was to start its best five players Saturday night against BYU. So the Utes started Jay Watkins for the first time all year and Carlon Brown for the first time in 11 games.

However, it made no difference whatsoever against the 10th- ranked Cougars as the Utes dug themselves a huge early hole they could never escape from despite a spirited second-half comeback.
