Summary


Maurice R. Hilleman never achieved the fame that other medical researchers had in the 20th century, but it is doubtful anyone can find a single person who did more to save lives and create the world many people take for granted today.

Hilleman, who died this week of cancer at age 85, developed a list of vaccines that, while impressive in its length, underscores the many diseases that once plagued people in even the most prosperous nations. Life is much easier today, especially for anxious parents and their vulnerable little ones.
