The Forbidden Photographs

Summary


Few images are as powerful as that of a flag-draped coffin when it comes to depicting the meaning of sacrifice. Whether a single casket of a hometown hero or multiple coffins in the cargo hold of a military aircraft, the images tell the story of the loss of human life in combat.

Just as Americans should see the jubilant images of service- member homecomings, so also should they see images that illustrate the price of freedom. This is why the Bush administration needs to lift a Pentagon ban on the release of photos of war dead arriving at the military mortuary at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.
