It's a state-of-the-art facility with some common sense touches. The University of Utah's brand new $36 million Orthopaedic Center, which opened Monday, offers not only high-tech advances like digital radiography but also a design that gives hobbling, ailing patients no-stairs access from the parking lot.

"The building and environment is unparalleled in the world," boasted spine and scoliosis specialist Dr. Darrel S. Brodke. The UUOC is "chartless and filmless" -- providing X-rays and other patient information via computer screens to doctors, patients and medical students -- and was also designed to provide sunlight and easily navigable hallways.
