Labor Committee Supports Relaxing Teachers Union Contracts

Summary


Utah teachers could more easily hop between unions and get out of those commitments quicker with legislation passed out of the Senate Business and Labor Committee on Thursday.

SB159, sponsored by Sen. Howard Stephenson, R-Draper, would prohibit teachers unions from requiring a one-year contract for school district employees. The bill would also require that only an employee can submit a request for payroll deductions directly to his or her employer. Stephenson said that approach cuts out the middleman and "ensures there is never duress or a feeling of compulsion" from a union representative.
