Summary
Dick Harmon perpetuates a common misunderstanding in his article referencing the "letter of the law" versus the "spirit of the law" ("Uona Kaveinga's appeal deserves to be judged by spirit of law," Aug. 14). I would expect he really meant to call on the NCAA to use mercy in its judgment rather than unemotional justice. The problem with his reference to the spirit of the law is that he infers that the spirit of the law would be more lenient than the letter -- a commonly shared reference that has no biblical support. The spirit of the law will always be tougher for people to comply with than the letter. Otherwise, it would not be the higher law.
