Summary
Today, Americans should pause to honor all veterans. This date was set aside in 1954 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower so "a grateful nation, on a day dedicated to world peace, may pay proper homage to all its veterans who have contributed so much to the cause of world peace and the preservation of our way of life."
The holiday originally was designated as Armistice Day, to mark the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of 1918. That war claimed more than 116,000 American lives and wounded more than 204,000 others.
