Retail Sales Were Lackluster in June

NEW YORK -- Consumers, deterred from shopping by unusually cool weather and higher gasoline prices, retreated from stores and malls during June and left the nation's retailers with their weakest performance in more than a year.

As retailers reported June's lackluster sales results Thursday, the disappointments cut across industry sectors, with discounters like Wal-Mart Stores Inc., many department stores and some apparel merchants among those falling short of expectations. An equally mixed group -- J.C. Penney Co. Inc., Neiman Marcus Group Inc., Saks Inc. and Limited Brands -- were among those whose sales met or beat analyst expectations.
