Repeating Vietnam Mistakes

Summary


I served in the Army during the Vietnam era, and it appears to me that we are reliving that piece of history. Some in the U.S. government are blaming Iran and Syria for making the situation worse, so we deployed a second aircraft carrier to the region to give the military more flexibility. That reminds me of the military and civilian leadership decision to expand the war in Vietnam beyond that country's borders.

Today the U.S. military is -- in the words of the Pentagon -- stretched "to the breaking point." Service members have been deployed up to four times since Sept 11, 2001. The reserve units are being called up in what only can be described as a back-door draft. The military is considering the use of non-citizens in the military, and over 16,000 single mothers have been deployed to Iraq.
