Election 2006 is over, with extraordinary change at the national level and business as usual in Utah. Most Utah political observers are likely feeling a mixture of elation and disappointment. Here are some reflections on the 2006 campaigns:

Best local TV commercial: Pretty slim pickings this year as few candidate ads were very creative. The best TV ad featured Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert in his pajamas and performing a one-handed newspaper catch, all to promote early voting (which was also one of the big success stories of 2006).

Worst lawn sign: Salt Lake County Sheriff Aaron Kennard sprinkled the valley with signs containing large letters, "A K." It was hard to determine if the sign was for a building contractor, a Realtor, or a political candidate.
