Progressives Must Learn to Pick Battles

Summary


A renowned conservative once remarked to me, on the occasion of the Republicans' retaking control of the U.S. House in 1994, that conservative gains would fall apart because "conservatives eat their young." Of course he was wrong, or wrong for a decade or more, since conservatives now control the White House, the U.S. House and the Senate. But his prediction was that victory would cause them to overreach, engage in fractious internecine debate and lose power as their once-tight coalition fragmented.

Progressives, on the other hand, don't need the catalyst of victory to self-annihilate. They do so even in defeat. Take the case of the California missions.
