Summary
It is with regret that I write about the hope expressed by this paper's editorial board on Aug. 29. The title of the piece was "Don't politicize poverty." The last sentence said, "All we can hope for is that the nation will not be biased against them," meaning those in poverty.
Unfortunately, this nation daily exhibits such bias. Examples include laws that put time limits on cash assistance for needy families with children, failure to enact and enforce laws that deal with discrimination in housing and appropriate access to financial services. Others include the way agencies and religious establishments make determinations about who may get help.
