During January, which, you may remember, was plagued with inversions, my husband, Grit, and I remembered we had two free airline tickets that were about to expire that would take us anywhere but Hawaii and Europe. Weary of the cold weather, you can bet we weren't going to choose Alaska. Instead, we settled on Cancun.

We have plenty of friends and family who have been there, so we heard lots of advice about where to stay and where to go. But the one bit of information we did not receive was the information we needed most. Nobody warned us about "the pitchers."
