Summary
It's hard to imagine a world without St. Peter's Basilica in it. If the pope is St. Peter, then his basilica is the crown jewel of Catholicism. The shrine turns 500 this month. Few human endeavors last long enough to celebrate such a birthday. But then few human endeavors touch and inspire humanity as deeply and in as many ways as St. Peter's.
Pope Julius II laid the first cornerstone of the Basilica on April 18, 1506. The church was erected over a chapel constructed by Constantine a thousand years earlier. It was believed that St. Peter was buried in the older church. For the current celebration, the Catholic Church has mounted an exhibit that includes a stone from around 180 A.D. that states "Peter is here."See the full content of this document
