Obituary: Hayward, Homer

Summary


As a dedicated civic leader, Homers list of achievements and services has included seats on numerous community boards; among them Robert Louis Stevenson School, Santa Catalina School, York School, S.A.B.L. School and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. He proudly served as president of the Lumber Merchants Association, and chaired the National Lumbermans Research Council. He also served as director of the Red Cross, was a member of the Salinas Planning Commission, chairman of the Monterey County Housing Authority, and vice president and president of the California Rodeo. He was a lifetime member of Rotary, Elks Lodge #614, American Legion, the International Concatenated Order of Hoo-Hoo and a proud member of the SAE fraternity. He was one of the founders and the first president of Corral de Tierra Country Club.

Homers philanthropic support included Monterey Boy Scouts of America, California Rodeo, Monterey Youth Museum, Monterey SPCA and Sunset Center of Carmel. He supported the growth of Santa Catalina School, Robert Louis Stevenson School, Monterey Institute of International Studies, York School, the Steinbeck Center and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. He also helped fund various projects for Community Hospital, Dorothys Place, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey, Door to Hope, Salinas YMCA, Hospice of the Central Coast and the Visiting Nurses Association. In Utah, his philanthropy included the University of Utah, Red Butte Garden and the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
