Novell Profit Lower Than Hoped

Novell Inc., a network-software maker that has one-third of its work force in Provo, had third-quarter profit of $23.4 million on growing demand for services such as consulting on the Linux operating system. The company's shares dropped Thursday on a lower- than-expected sales gain.

Net income was 6 cents a share, compared with a loss of $12.4 million, or 3 cents, a year ago, said the company, which is based in Waltham, Mass. Sales gained 7.7 percent to $304.6 million, missing the $306.6 million average estimate of 13 analysts in a Thomson Financial survey.
