Summary
The Deseret Morning News editorial (Nov. 15) is right. The teacher shortage indicates it is time to pay the piper. Utah teachers have had the largest classes, with nearly the lowest wages in the country since there have been statistics on the issue. Now times have changed. Women, especially, can now find higher-paying jobs that are family-friendly and carry more status than teaching. Teachers are not only poorly paid but have to face increased disrespect from students, parents and even some community groups. No wonder they quit! Those who choose the profession find that their altruism doesn't make up for the low pay and disrespect, especially for men.
Perhaps Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. was on to something when he helped several districts hire teachers from Mexico. Teacher wages are much lower in Mexico, so there should be plenty of Mexicans willing to teach in Utah schools.See the full content of this document
