As Utah's gang conditions increasingly affect the entire state's communities and resources, the Utah Gang Investigators Association recommends a comprehensive approach toward gang reduction that includes prevention, intervention and suppression strategies.
Though often thought to be a strictly law enforcement issue, those more familiar with gang association know it to be the result of social conditions. The reasons and causes of gang association are varied and -- at times -- debated. Most often, these causes and conditions include poverty, lack of self-esteem, reduced moral standards, economic gain, power, protection, substance abuse, institutional racism, deficiencies in social policies, misdirected social controls, dysfunctional family life, low school standards and performance, media influence, lack of social opportunity and social disorganization.See the full content of this document
