One New York woman's unsuccessful battle with cancer has become a call for help from the Kanab-based Best Friends Animal Society.

More than 20 years ago Sara Whalen founded Pets Alive, a sanctuary in New York that today cares for more than 500 homeless animals that include dogs, cats, birds, cows, goats and retired carriage horses. Pets Alive is the only "retirement home" for New York City carriage horses.
