Joe the Plumber apparently didn't set out to become a political icon. He got sucked into the vortex and lost his real identity, becoming a symbol of something Sen. John McCain hopes will resonate with voters.

The real Joe may not even vote for McCain. "It's a private booth," he reminded reporters who asked the question. He also doesn't completely fit the profile that has been built for him. He doesn't have a plumber's license, and he really hasn't figured out how he might buy the plumbing business that could be valued at more than $250,000, putting him in the cross-hairs of Barack Obama's proposed tax increase.
