SALT LAKE CITY -- People in the lunch crowd at the University of Utah Union stopped in their tracks to watch the TV screen as the 18th miner emerged from the depths of the Chilean desert in a rescue capsule.

A smile crossed their lips as Esteban Rojas knelt in an apparent prayer of gratitude for being lifted to safety after 69 days underground. Jeff Hanson and Taunya Dressler from U. marketing and communications were among those with their eyes glued to CNN and their hearts rapt for a Chilean man they had never heard of a few minutes earlier.
