Medicine has Progressed

Summary

I agree with the writer of a few days ago who belittled those who take medications for diseases such as depression (Readers' Forum, March 26). We should go back to what they did in the old days. People should be locked in institutions indefinitely, or if they are are particularly rowdy we should jab out their prefrontal cortex with a pick shoved into their brain up through their nose.

I have only been in the medical profession a few years, but I can tell you from my experience that depression is a disease. Would you mock someone for taking antibiotics for pneumonia? Would you belittle someone for having painful, infected gallstones removed? Why are people weak because they take a pill for depression that improves their symptoms?
