Some friends from Chicago joined me for the first few days of my new life in Boston, so our initial stops upon arriving in town included some rather touristy destinations. Number one on the list? Walden Pond.

I'd been there before, yet I was still struck by how simply Henry David Thoreau lived on that secluded shore outside Concord, Mass. His home there was a mere 10 feet by 15 feet, filled with a bed, a desk, three chairs, a stove and a small table. And very little else.
