Summary


Pulitzer-winning playwright August Wilson, whose work explores the black American experience in the 20th century, has been awarded the 2004 Chicago Tribune Literary Prize for lifetime achievement.

Wilson, 59, began his cycle of plays with "Jitney," which was set in a Pittsburgh taxi station in the 1970s. Eight other plays followed, each one focused on a different decade in the 20th century, including acclaimed Broadway plays such as "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" and "Joe Turner's Come and Gone."
