Iraqi Voters Hailed, but Much of World Wary

JERUSALEM -- European opponents of the U.S. war in Iraq hailed Sunday's election as a positive development in the country's rehabilitation. But reaction in the Arab world and Asia was mixed as concerns remain over the continuing presence of U.S. troops in Iraq and the low turnout of Sunni Muslims in the polling.

French President Jacques Chirac called the vote a success in a telephone conversation Monday with President Bush. Relations between the two countries have been strained over U.S. policy in the region.
