Healing the Enemy an Example of True Love

Summary

I am here at the notorious Abu Ghraib prison with the 115th Field Hospital, with the assignment to provide for the medical and surgical care of the detainees and injured civilians. This is a unique mission for an army hospital at a time of war. The usual role is to care for injured soldiers and POWs that present from the battlefield. These patients are given their lifesaving surgery or medical care, and within 72 hours they are normally sent off to Landstuhl, Germany, and then to the United States for the remainder of their care.

The 115th has the sole mission of caring for the insurgents, prisoners and civilians that are injured or require medical attention. Sometimes this is routine medical care for prisoners already on the prison compound; sometimes it is emergency surgery for insurgents fresh from a firefight with our military. Sometimes it is caring for innocent bystanders injured in crossfire or from the explosion of an IED (roadside bomb) set off by insurgents. We have been told to render the same quality of care to our patients as we would to a U.S. soldier under similar circumstances. Only we don't get the satisfaction of caring for our soldiers, only for those whom our soldiers are fighting or have captured.
