Summary
I read with interest the letter from Roger Terry ("Economic darwinism," Readers' Forum, Oct. 19), where he described many Christians as supporting "economic darwinism." I then thought of the recent information that reported that the top 5 percent of U.S. taxpayers (adjusted gross incomes of $160,000 and above) paid 59 percent of all federal income tax revenue for 2008. During that same year, 37 percent of all returns filed (52 million of the 140 million filed) used deductions, credits and exemptions to bring their taxes due to zero. I did not know that we were already a socialist, welfare state.
I am not working to "accumulate as much wealth as legally possible." I am working to be self-reliant and to see to the needs of my family. If that is "self-interest" then OK. The United States, and Utah in particular, have some of the most charitable and service-oriented people on the planet. I would like the freedom to contribute my support to causes that I choose instead of Uncle Sam taking much of my hard-earned money and giving it to those who view that support as a "right." Terry makes some good points but I can't go all the way with him.See the full content of this document
