"We get calls all the time," says Jill Fletcher, the public information officer for the Salt Lake Valley Landfill. "People will say that they threw out a cigar box they realize Grandpa hid a thousand dollars in, or something like that, and they just have to get it back. And we have to say, 'I'm sorry.' "

For a number of reasons, the landfill that services all of Salt Lake County doesn't recycle. As soon as garbage enters the gates, it gets treated like garbage. First, a heavy-duty compactor runs over the newly deposited refuse five times, then it is leveled by a bulldozer and finally, at the end of the day, the mangled mess is covered with a combination of cellulose and cement mix known as posi- shell. The next day, new deliveries of garbage are piled on top, and the process is repeated.
