PROVO -- The older half of a father-son duo charged in the shooting death of two Vernal men has pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in Utah State Prison on Wednesday.

Lewis Francis Heffelfinger, 55, pleaded guilty before Judge Anthony Schofield to two capital counts of aggravated murder and two first-degree felony counts of aggravated robbery in a plea bargain with the state involving the October 2001 murders. Heffelfinger was originally charged with capital murder, which could have resulted in his receiving the death penalty.
