Summary


Hopefuls come to America to find a clean slate, freedom, acceptance, or because of a belief that this land is an ideal place to live. My parents wanted their children to live the dreams and opportunities that many American citizens take for granted: to go to a quality school, have a family life, to achieve to the highest level and to be capable of enjoying life to its fullest capacity. Living those dreams brought them to leave everything behind, having practically no financial support and yet managing to start over. My parents are the family's living examples of strength, courage and ambition. Their journey is the definition of heroism that will always be painted in my heart.

The future in the tiny island of Japan did not seem bright for the family. Japan was struggling economically in the world, so the educational pressure was enormous. Mother was concerned for the welfare of my 10- and 14-year-old brothers, given that Japanese education was purely competition-based. Japanese society literally created schools for the geniuses in academics, and those that were not considered the best did not succeed in this harsh world.
