Summary
Social Security funding is poorly understood. Ralph M. Horton's letter ("Social Security's problem," Readers' Forum, Dec. 8) incorrectly stated that the money we citizens (and our employers) pay into the Social Security trust fund is "not in an interest bearing account." Many citizens believe this, or worse, that there is no trust fund at all. Some people with certain business agendas or ideological beliefs twist facts to suit their purposes.
I encourage readers to surf the Social Security web site, ssa.gov. Doing so will reveal many facts that include: 1)the trust fund has earned between 4 percent and 11 percent effective interest from the '60s until the present, 2)there is currently about $2.6 trillion in the fund that has grown significantly, 3)the progressive nature of Social Security payouts require that future payouts be changed somewhat for the fund to remain solvent over the very long haul.See the full content of this document
