LAHORE, Pakistan -- Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived home from exile to a tumultuous welcome at Lahore airport on Sunday evening, providing a new rallying point for the country's disillusioned opposition and setting the stage for an overnight shift of the political scene.

Sharif's unimpeded homecoming stood in stunning contrast to his attempt to return here less than three months ago, when Pakistan's president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, ordered Sharif summarily deported. The change appeared to reflect an acknowledgment by Musharraf, who overthrew Sharif in a coup eight years ago, that Sharif remains enormously popular and that his own authority may be waning.
