Early School Doesn't Help

Summary

Stephen D. Timothy's letter was funny and sarcastic; unfortunately he missed the point. Putting children in school earlier than ever doesn't result in any measurable achievement gains. Children's brains take time to develop, just as their bodies do. On the contrary, too much early academics has been shown to be harmful. In Sweden, school starts at age 7. Their rates of dyslexia and other learning disabilities are a fraction of that in the United States. If a child is developmentally ready, it takes fewer than 100 hours to transmit the skills of reading and arithmetic.

As for extending school years, many high school classes are filler without much academic content. I don't know any seniors who took school seriously who didn't have almost all of the requirements filled before their senior year.
