A new DVD collection of five films (two are re-issues) by Martin Scorsese demonstrates the filmmaker's diversity (released individually and as "The Martin Scorsese Collection." $59.92, six discs).

-- "GoodFellas: Two-Disc Special Edition" (Warner, 1990; R for violence, sex, language; $26.99, two discs). Though quite harsh, this remains one of the great gangster pictures, the true story of Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), who joined the mob then became a federal witness. Liotta is excellent, as is the entire cast -- Robert De Niro, Paul Sorvino, Samuel L. Jackson and especially Lorraine Bracco. And Joe Pesci won an Oscar for his knockout performance as a loose cannon who eventually must be dealt with. Horrifying violence and wall-to-wall profanity but nonetheless a rich, rewarding film.
