Don't Bargain with Rights

Summary


Kenneth Starr and Viet Dinh assert (My View, March 15) that Congress has authority to grant Washington, D.C., residents voting rights because it has legislative authority over the district "in all cases whatsoever."

Seeking to grant D.C. residents representation in Congress and expanding Utah's representation based solely on population are separate matters. Politicians should not use the civil rights of Utahns as a bargaining chip to buy GOP support for this controversial bill.
