Sports today are dominated by the "spoiled, egoist thugs who dominate the NBA and NFL," as David Eskelsen (Readers' Forum, Aug. 22) so graciously puts it.
Why do some people carry such resentment for professional athletes? These guys aren't thugs. They aren't gang members. They are men who have dedicated themselves to something they love. They have reached the pinnacle of their profession through hard work and dedication. Most pro athletes are friendly, intelligent and hard working. There are always exceptions, but these are not the rule. The argument that professional athletics has strayed from the spirit of competition and become too money driven is a valid one. But to say all pro athletes are self-absorbed, spoiled thugs is close- minded. Let's not make general stereotypes of entire groups based on the actions of a few.See the full content of this document
