Consumers' Rights Are Expanded Under the New Law

Summary


Consumers in the western United States -- Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming -- will on Dec. 1 be the first to have the right to one free copy of their credit report from each of the credit bureaus. Consumers in the Midwestern states will have access beginning March 1, 2005. In the southern states, eligibility begins June 1, 2005. Eligibility for consumers in the eastern United States, Puerto Rico and U.S. territories starts Sept. 1, 2005.

Consumers can request one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus -- Equifax, Experian and TransUnion -- via a centralized credit report request Web site, www.AnnualCreditReport.com.
