Summary
When Thomas D. Coppin (Readers' Forum, May 23) talks about compromise being vital, yes, it was vital at the time of our Founders to allow for the creation of the Constitution. Thomas Jefferson and James Madison wanted an extremely limited government with more liberty and freedom for the individual, while Alexander Hamilton believed the federal government should be powerful with not as many liberties to the individual. Out of this compromise came the Constitution, which is supposed to be the law of the land.
In present times, when a politician says he will compromise, it can only mean one of two things. He will either compromise his anti- Constitution beliefs and move more toward the Constitution to enact legislation, or he will compromise the Constitution to reach over the aisle to legislate laws that are not enumerated by the Constitution.See the full content of this document
