Summary
I wish to respond to Jim Jackson's letter (Readers' Forum, Dec. 25) proclaiming there will be no fallout from resumed underground nuclear testing. Mr. Jackson faults Mary Dickson (Readers' Forum, Dec. 23) for being emotional. As a downwind cancer survivor, she has earned the right to be emotional. That, however, does not mean her facts are wrong. I would suggest Mr. Jackson consult with the National Cancer Institute, which has determined that "all above- ground tests and a limited number of underground tests conducted before 1971 released a number of radioiodines, including Iodine-131 (I-131), into the atmosphere."
Many of the 804 underground tests conducted at the Nevada Test Site released significant amounts of radioactive fallout into the atmosphere, where they were picked up by the jet stream and carried across the country. Specifically, on Nov. 29, 1951, the 1.2 kiloton underground test Jangle Uncle produced an 11,500 foot plume of radioactive dust.See the full content of this document
