Bring Back Surplus Estimates

Summary


It ought to be a no-brainer that taxpayers deserve to know as much as possible about how their money is being collected and spent. So it smacks of the worst sort of political arrogance to hear that some state lawmakers apparently have succeeded in getting the Utah Tax Commission to remove from its monthly report any estimates of the state's current tax surplus or deficit.

If this decision holds, Utahns won't know until near the end of the surplus year how things are going. If a deficit looms, there will be little political pressure early in the year to take corrective action. Conversely, of course, lawmakers won't have to face any embarrassment during boom times for decisions to cut taxes or not fund certain programs.
