Summary
Bill Revene (Readers' Forum, Aug. 1) claims that low birthrates improve quality of life. The flawed proof he provides is that countries with high standards of living are not the countries with large families. Correlation does not prove causation. Just because countries with high standards of living have low birthrates, we cannot assume that quality of life improved because the quantity of children decreased.
Any family can also be affected by the increasing divorce rates, large number of latchkey and day-care kids while both parents work, astounding childhood obesity and diabetes rates, lack of a desire to save rather than go into debt, and other issues we are facing in our country. It is not the number of children a family has but the quality and quantity of time we spend with them.See the full content of this document
