Bigots Are Intolerant

Summary

I resent the letter that William Jay Carlson wrote concerning bigotry (Readers' Forum, Sept. 23). His own bigoted attitude is reflected in his comments. However, he forgot to consider one important characteristic of a bigot, that of intolerance. A person can be against an issue and partial to his/her group, religion, etc. and not be intolerant. Carlson makes the same fatal mistake that all bigots make: He assumes that disagreement means intolerance. I personally am against gay marriage, however I don't harbor ill feelings toward those who aren't. Neither do I condone the homosexual lifestyle, but I don't persecute those who do. Carlson obviously harbors feelings of intolerance toward the members of this community that don't agree with his opinion. That is the epitome of a bigot.
