Summary
In his Jan. 19 letter to the editor, Don Willie criticized the information cards that NAMI Utah passed out to East High students, saying that the signs and thoughts of depression listed on the cards "are, in reality, what we teens feel as we navigate adolescence and deal with our raging hormones." That is precisely why depression in teens is so hard to spot. It is similar to the feelings and behaviors that every teen experiences.
Mr. Willie also felt that the mental illness video shown by NAMI serves to increase, rather than decrease, the stigma among teens. I have seen this video and I disagree. It features two young people talking openly and honestly about their experiences with depression and bipolar syndrome. When my daughter began to talk about her depression with friends and classmates, she was taken aback by how many of them had either gone through the same thing or known someone who had.See the full content of this document
