WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration on Tuesday released its secret guidelines for harsh interrogations of battlefield captives and corrected a State Department report on global terrorism report that mistakenly claimed successes in the war on terrorism.

White House legal counsel Alberto Gonzales and senior Justice Department lawyers separately released hundreds of pages of legal documents defining what U.S. interrogators could do when grilling suspected Iraqi insurgents held in Iraq or suspected al-Qaida operatives held in Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
