Big Relief for Military Family

A bill passed during the 2009 legislative session is credited with keeping a West Valley family together in the face of an upcoming military deployment. HB401, sponsored by Rep. Tim Cosgrove, D-Murray, didn't receive a lot of press. But to Ben and Tera Frank, of West Valley, the law was the key to making sure Ben Frank's two sons would be there when he gets back from Afghanistan in April. The bill, which passed nearly unanimously in the Utah Legislature, ensures that military members will not...

Dedication Blesses Two African Nations

During a historic 16-day tour of Africa on Aug. 16-31, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the LDS Quorum of the Twelve dedicated Cameroon and Rwanda for the preaching of the gospel. In so doing, he became the first known apostle to ever set foot in either nation. "A dedicatory experience for a country is always spiritual," Elder Holland said during an interview with the Church News upon his return to Salt Lake City. "These two were particularly spiritual. Maybe it was because it was Africa. Maybe it...

Overcome Fears, a Better Member Missionary

Our bishop asked my husband and I to audit a member missionary class for the next three weeks. This is an area that I have basically neglected. I talk to family members about the church, but I have never invited them to talk with the missionaries. I have at least 50 pass-along cards in my purse, but I have given out none. I have never invited a stranger or for that matter a nonmember friend to church. We've had several discussions with the missionaries about member missionary work. I've usual...

Institutes Provide Anchor in 'Unstable World'

With the beginning of a new school year, hundreds of thousands of college-age Mormon students are enrolling in classes on religion in addition to their regular studies or employment. In addition to encouraging Mormons to acquire secular knowledge, the church has established extensive programs to help young students gain religious knowledge. Accordingly, the church provides numerous opportunities for postsecondary students to receive religious instruction through its institute of religion prog...

The Dinner Diva: Lettuce 2.0

Last week we talked about turning over a new leaf -- as in dumping the iceberg lettuce in our lives and going for a truly tasty (and nutritious) salad. If you'll remember, I was grousing big time about this lackluster lettuce both in the taste and nutrition department. So we figured out some new lettuces to use as the foundation for our new and improved salad. Now we're going to get creative with some add-ins; additional salad greens that will not only step up the flavor and ingenuity of your...

The Flylady: Time to Dream

I found the Internet in 1996 when I was attending Brevard College. The very first thing I ever searched for on the Internet was help getting my home in order. I typed in the search box: The Sidetracked Home Executives, Pam Young and Peggy Jones. I was delighted to find them after several years of being sidetracked and "Off their Bandwagon"! Their books and system helped me to survive a bad marriage and keep things together for my son! They taught me how to be kind to myself. I went searching ...

Popular Housing Program Extended

Prospective Utah homebuyers now have a second chance to hit a "home run" in the housing market. Gov. Gary Herbert on Friday announced the extension of a grant program aimed at stimulating the state's economy.

2 Books by American Fork Teen Hit Stores

The blood rushes to Melissa Rowley's cheeks as she clenches her paper -- a quick-write exercise for her English class at American Fork High. She hands it to her neighbor for peer review, heart pounding in her ears. "I didn't realize we had to read them to each other," the 17- year-old recalled later, rolling her eyes in embarrassment. "It was kind of scatterbrained. I think I wrote it about a parking ticket I got."

Shurtleff Donors Often Have Legal Problems

Despite previous controversy, Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff -- the state's top law enforcement officer -- is continuing to accept donations from companies that have faced state investigations for telephone or Internet fraud or deceptive business practices. In fact, disclosure forms filed this week show that his political action committee -- called "PAC for Utah's Future" -- accepted $84,500 from such companies this year, and some of them were its biggest donors.

Man Enters Guilty Plea in Teen's Death

Parley Jeffs Dutson, who once was found guilty of killing his teenage girlfriend but had the verdict reversed on a technicality, has pleaded guilty to a charge of murder. Dutson, 21, entered a guilty plea this week to murder, a first- degree felony, for the 2007 shooting death of Kara Hopkins, 15, at a party. As part of a plea bargain, a second charge of aggravated sexual assault, a first-degree felony, was dropped.

Work Excites Youths, Family History Work That Is

MESA, Ariz. -- Youths in the Val Vista Ward, Mesa Arizona Mountain View Stake, did a lot more than swim, watch movies or hang out with friends during the summer. Instead they participated in what ward leaders called the "STEP" program -- Students Trying Elijah's Promise. Charles Doane, a Mormon bishop, said the youths in his ward are usually challenged to read the Book of Mormon during the summer, but this year they decided to focus on family history work.
