Las Vegas Goes Long to Beat Bees

LAS VEGAS -- The Las Vegas 51s used the long ball to edge the Salt Lake Bees 8-7 on Saturday night. The Bees led 5-2 going into the bottom of the fourth, but a three- run homer by Aaron Mathews tied the game. In the seventh, Rich Thompson (2-1) came into the game with two outs and no runners on base, but he walked Travis Snider. Brian Dopirak then lifted a 2-1 pitch over the left-field wall to put Las Vegas ahead to stay.

Baseball Hometown Report

Player of the week Brian Budrow Pitching well for the Yakima Bears as a relief pitcher. Picked up his second save of the season -- the former Ute's first of his professional career.

Extreme Makeover Leaves Pirates with No-Names

The best pitcher traded at the deadline -- Jake Peavy -- probably won't even be ready to pitch for at least another month, if at all. One of the best position players traded -- Scott Rolen -- went to a Reds team that was 11 games under .500, 9 1/2 games out of first place, and had lost nine out of 10.

Hawaii Coach Learns an Expensive Lesson

If you've ever been asked to speak in public -- at church, a school classroom, a banquet, a funeral -- then you probably know how absolutely embarrassing it is to say something you thought was pretty dang funny ... and nobody else in the room sees the slightest bit of humor in it. For an instant, you wish the floor would swallow you up. You wish you could pull those silly words back, stuff 'em right back in your mouth and quickly say something else.

Phelps beats Cavic, butterfly record ROME -- Michael Phelps beat Milorad Cavic again. No doubt about it.

Long Races to Another Win in Utah

TOOELE -- Even when he is driving a different type of car, Patrick Long finds a way to cultivate success in his trips to Utah. Racing at Miller Motorsports Park for the second time in three months, Long turned in a dominant performance. He claimed the pole position in qualifying and followed up by claiming his first victory in a NASCAR race in the Camping World Series 125 on Saturday.

Lincecum Leads Giants by Phillies

SAN FRANCISCO -- Tim Lincecum won his 12th game blanking the Phillies 2-0 in throwing eight shutout innnings. Lincecum struck out eight and leads the majors with 191. On Monday, he struck out 15 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Brian Wilson pitched the ninth for his 27th save in 31 opportunities and gave the Giants a major league-leading 14th shutout.

Victorious Long a Good Investment

TOOELE -- Fundraising is a new experience for Patrick Long. But that is a step he had to take to make his return trip to Miller Motorsports Park on Saturday possible. When it comes to American Le Mans Series racing, Long has been a paid member of a factory team for the last eight years. The biggest worries he has had in that series is worrying about managing appearance days and their corresponding fees.

Trade Winners and Losers

WINNERS 1. Philadelphia Phillies: They didn't get Halladay, but they got Cliff Lee, who promptly threw a complete-game four-hitter in his Phillies debut. The Phils, who didn't have to give up any blue- chippers coveted by the Jays, have greatly improved their chances of winning a second straight title.

Keselowski Wins Race in Nationwide

NEWTON, Iowa -- The inaugural Nationwide Series race at Iowa Speedway came down to a two-man battle between points leader Kyle Busch and top series regular Brad Keselowski. In a twist that's becoming all too common for Busch, he was forced settle for yet another second-place finish. This time, it was Keselowski who pulled off the victory with a gutsy move down the stretch.

In beating New York for the third straight game, the White Sox scored six times in the second against A.J. Burnett and added six more in the eighth.

Spartans Capture Legion Title

KEARNS -- Stephon Aloi didn't pitch at all for the Murray Spartans during the varsity season in the spring, and made only occasional appearances for the Spartans' American Legion team this summer. So imagine his surprise when he was given the start by coach Jackson Babcock in his team's state championship game against Taylorsville on Saturday afternoon.

For Pete's Sake, Give Rose His Hall Call

If you need verification -- beyond the stats -- that Pete Rose belongs in the Baseball Hall of Fame, look no further than the immortal Henry Aaron, who last week said, in essence, give the man a break. It's not like he killed anyone.

Class 1a Football Back to Being Competitive

For the first time in a while, 1A football feels like -- how's this for a novel concept -- 1A football. Schools like Enterprise, Kanab, North Sevier and Parowan have recently been playing football down in Class 1A despite participating in the 2A level in all other sports. Small school football purists are elated that realignment has changed all that.
