Massive Pipeline Dig Starts Monday

SPRINGVILLE -- Construction of a massive pipeline to carry Colorado River water to the Salt Lake City area begins Monday, when crews start digging up 400 East. The year-long project is part of the federal Central Utah Project Completion Act.

Body of Missing Hooper Woman Found

WEST HAVEN, Weber County -- Family members of a Hooper woman who was found dead in a field Sunday believe police "slacked off" and didn't try hard enough to find her. Authorities confirmed they found the body of who they believe is Katherine "Kay" Doutre, 51, shortly after midnight in a field near 3100 West and 4000 South in West Haven, but an Ogden woman and her boyfriend said they spotted the body 10 days before and called police.

Couple Homeless After House Fire

A house fire left an elderly couple homeless as it caused extensive damage to both floors of the home Sunday afternoon. The Salt Lake City Fire Department received the call about 3:30 p.m. and arrived to find heavy smoke and some flames from the first floor of a residence near 1280 West and 300 South, said spokesman Mark Bednarik.

Book Details Adventures of Fbi Agent/Lds Bishop

With a gun and a Bible in hand each day for protection, Mike McPheters led an exciting double life. An FBI agent by day and a Mormon bishop by night, McPheters combined fighting crime with keeping marriages and congregations together as he served four times as a bishop.

Good Advice Can Have Bad Timing

Why is good advice always delivered with bad timing? For example:

Planes Clip Wings at S.L. Airport

Southwest Airlines passengers heading to Albuquerque Sunday morning were evacuated from a plane after it clipped wings with a FedEx cargo plane. The incident is under investigation, but Salt Lake City International Airport personnel say it appears the Southwest 737 plane was pushing away from the gate when it clipped wings with the cargo plane, shearing off a piece of the Southwest plane's wing.

Some Mormons May Not Understand Joseph's Translation Process

As we continue our discussion about the Book of Mormon translation, some members may be troubled that the process doesn't match their conceptions of how they thought the process worked. For members who were unaware of the seer stone in the hat, at least two questions or concerns may arise: 1) Is it strange that Joseph used a stone in a hat? 2) Why have we have always been told that Joseph used the Urim and Thummim? To answer the first question, we might also ask: Is it strange that a man coul...

Choosing a Positive Attitude During the Christmas Season

As much as I'm rankled by the way department stores and marketers skip right over Thanksgiving -- shoving Halloween candy off store shelves only to make way for the Christmas sweets, hanging garlands and candy canes as soon as the calendar turns to November -- I must also admit that I love the Christmas season. I love that trees on city streets are lined in twinkle lights, that homes smell like fresh pine, and that for a few weeks our collective energy turns toward something that, at heart, i...

Brothers From Boise Differ Politically, Agree On Cardinals

BOISE -- Idaho Secretary of State Ben Ysursa is a Republican from one of the union's reddest states. Illinois trial lawyer Bernard Ysursa is a Democratic activist and financial booster of President Barack Obama. But these Basque brothers from Boise share at least two things: Their St. Louis Cardinals baseball team -- and a touch of enjoyment at the foibles of politicians from the other brother's state and party.

Teen Trip Full of Tears, Tattoos

In what could be called a micro version of East meeting West, a group of Utah teens arrived back home Saturday safe and sound and changed forever by a 16-day stay in one of the poorest corners of the world -- West Bengal, India. Many were sporting intricate tattoos on their hands and forearms - - done in henna and hand-painted on by the students, and nowhere near as lasting as the memories they said they will carry with them the rest of their lives.

Blog Posting 'News Yule Use'

Holiday shopping is apt to be challenging and rewarding this year as more people struggle economically because of the recession and retailers offer extraordinary deals to lure shoppers. The Deseret News has launched a blog, Ka-Chingle Bells, so reporters and readers can share hot deals and other, if you'll forgive the pun, "news yule use" of the season. Look for it under blogs online at deseretnews.com.

Herbert Builds His Own Team of Rivals

Like his predecessor, Gov. Gary Herbert is relying on a formal group of advisers that includes business and community leaders. But unlike former Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., Herbert has added a pair of political rivals within the GOP to what he's now calling the Governor's Advisory Team.

Tips for Holiday Value Hunters

Experts say that far more shoppers will be online trying to snag great "Cyber Monday" deals than during a normal week. And a survey of 10,000 households for the Consumer Internet Barometer found that consumers are feeling frugal, which extends to online shopping where most are expected to hold off on big-ticket items until they see major incentives like free shipping and discounts. But huge deals may be few and far between as manufacturers and retailers have maintained smaller inventories and...

Campaign Highlights Finances of the Elderly

The first sign of trouble came when she mistakenly took her husband's medicine. She'd been caring for him for a while, and her children thought she was simply overwhelmed. After he died, they would find that their mom, a retired IRS agent who could recite the tax code even when she was confused, was hiding collection notices from the IRS under her chair. Unscrupulous salespeople preyed on her. One sold her an unnecessary coating for her roof, another a warranty on her 21-year- old car. Most i...

Swap Site Satisfies Strapped Shoppers

Tracy Walters loves books so much she keeps a spreadsheet: books she's read, books she owns, her all-time top 10. She likes scary, supernatural books, "as long as they're not gross or disgusting," so Dean Koontz and Stephen King make the list. She doesn't see herself as "a romance person," but Nora Roberts makes the list, too, for great stories. The best? Well, that might be Alice Hoffman, who wrote "Practical Magic" and "Aquamarine." Or maybe that quirky, interesting John Irving.

Just Can't Wait to Wait in Long Lines

At the new In-N-Out Burger, one man started camping outside the entrance 28 hours before the grand opening -- soon to be joined by hundreds more, until the parking lot looked like a Boy Scout camp-a- rama. At movie theaters up and down the Wasatch Front, 18,000 people bagged bedtime so they could be the first to see the premiere of the latest Twilight vampire movie, "New Moon," starting at midnight.

Downtown Site for Philadelphia Temple Chosen

Enthusiasm and anticipation are percolating among Mormons in southeast Pennsylvania with the recent announcement by the First Presidency of a site for the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple. In a press release dated Nov. 19, the First Presidency announced that the temple would be built at 1739 Vine Street in downtown Philadelphia. The site sits near City Hall and Museum Row in the downtown core area, less than a mile from the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Corroon a Step Closer to Race for Governor

Copyright 2009 Deseret News Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon sounds more than ever like a candidate for governor after hearing new poll results that show nearly a third of Utahns would vote for him next year over Gov. Gary Herbert.
